In touch with new opportunities - Dispersive Signal Technology

NXT has invented a new touch screen technology that uses bending waves to determine the position of a finger or stylus.  Piezo sensors detect the bending waves that result from contact with the screen. These signals are then corrected for dispersion by proprietary algorithms and processed to reveal the location of the contact.

Conventional methods of detecting touch through the interruption of electrical fields, acoustic waves, optical fields, or infrared light can be affected by the presence of screen surface contaminants and scratches.  Since DST recognises touch by analysing the bending waves created in the screen substrate, its performance is not affected by scratches and dirt on the screen.  This unique approach provides fast, accurate, reliable touch performance and operation and also supports hand, glove and stylus input and multi-user capability.

This technology is licensed exclusively to3M Innovative Properties Company, who paid NXT a $4-million upfront payment in 2003 and will pay royalties over the life of the patents.  As part of the agreement 3M sponsored continued research at NXT.

The technology is now in commercial production with 3M Touch Systems.  Current DST Display Providers are listed below:
